Heading #

Solutions to the polynomial equation x^2 + b*x + c = 0.

Introduction #

This quiz illustrates the use of formula answers as elements of an ordered or unordered sequence, in particular the so-called discriminant and the two roots of a polynomial equation of second degree. The expressions for the roots include the square root function, which you should write as sqrt().

Qstn_phrase_1 #

Enter in sequence the discriminant D, the smallest and the largest of the two roots for the polynomial equation x^2 + b*x + c = 0, thus altogether 3 expressions:

Correct_answer_1 #

[ !qcmath b^2 - 4*c ] [ !qcmath (-b -sqrt(D))/2 ] [ !qcmath (-b +sqrt(D))/2 ]

Hints_1 #

2 The answer was incorrect and you will now be prompted for each expression in turn.

Qstn_name_number_2

Qstn_phrase_2

Enter the expression for the discriminant:

Correct_answer_2

!qcmath b^2 - 4*c

Hints_2

Try again, possibly after looking in a book. [A correct answer could be b^2 - 4*c]

Reward_2

3 Correct.

Qstn_name_number_3

Qstn_phrase_3

Enter the expression for the smallest root:

Correct_answer_3

!qcmath (-b -sqrt(D))/2

Hints_3

Try again. [A correct answer could be (-b -sqrt(D))/2]

Reward_3

4 Correct.

Qstn_name_number_4

Qstn_phrase_4

Enter the expression for the largest root:

Correct_answer_4

!qcmath (-b +sqrt(D))/2

Hints_4

Try again. [A correct answer could be (sqrt(D)-b)/2]

Reward_4

1 Correct. Back to the first question.

Qstn_phrase_5

The next questions illustrate other ways of presenting the same questions. First with fields in the question phrase for entering each expression:

Enter for the polynomial equation x^2 + b*x + c = 0

the discriminant D [30],
the smallest root [30] and
the largest root [30].

Correct_answer_5

[ !qcmath b^2 - 4*c ] [ !qcmath (-b-sqrt(D))/2 ] [ !qcmath (-b +sqrt(D))/2 ]

Hints_5

You must have made a typo. Try again.

Qstn_name_number_6

Qstn_phrase_6

Enter the discriminant and the two roots to the polynomial equation x^2 + b*x + c = 0, thus 3 expressions written in any order:

Correct_answer_6

{ !qcmath b^2 - 4*c }{ !qcmath (-b -sqrt(D))/2 }{ !qcmath (-b +sqrt(D))/2 }

Hints_6

You must have made a typo. Try again.

Qstn_name_number_7

Qstn_phrase_7

Enter anyone of the roots:

Correct_answer_7

{.1 !qcmath (-b -sqrt(D))/2 }{ !qcmath (-b +sqrt(D))/2 }

Hints_7

Try again. Did you make a typo?
